The tunnels along Tunnel Drive were first blasted through the rock in 1892 as part of an irrigation project.
In 1908, under the direction of Warden Cleghorn, the tunnels were enlarged to accommodate horses and buggies, using the labor of 26 convicts.
It was closed to auto traffic in 1990 do to unsafe bridges.
The longest tunnel measures 400 feet in length, while the other two are each about 100 feet long.
Now, it is opened to foot traffic.
