The Huerfano Butte was documented as early as 1818.

Spanish Traders and Native Americans used the Butte as a landmark for travel. Later, two notable railroad surveys were conducted in the area around 1853. The Huerfano Butte is currently located on private property and cannot be approached. Huerfano means “orphan” in Spanish.
